The Proposal

Amanda

I woke up the morning of the proposal knowing that Scott and I had a date planned for the day. It was raining pretty hard outside, and I said to him “Oh I hope our date isn’t outside today!” He replied, “Oh don’t worry it’s not.” (Spoiler: it totally was). Later in the day, it had thankfully stopped raining and we were almost finished getting ready for our date when Scott sent me upstairs to grab something (while he apparently grabbed the ring). On the way back down the stairs, my heel caught on my dress and I fell down a few of the stairs. I took off my shoes, Scott made me a bag of ice, and then ushered me into the car anyway. *suspicious* I put on my Birkenstocks and figured I would change later. As we were driving, I was shocked to see us heading into DC (as we are not really city people). We pulled up to the wharf and I had a worry that he would propose in front of a ton of people (at this point all the clues had pretty much added up). I should have had more faith! He led me to a cute little boat and I was in SHOCK! We cruised around the Potomac for a while, and then Scott got down on one knee. I was so excited that I forgot to say yes (I also forgot to put on shoes)! The first mate was supposed to be taking photos, but he was so excited he forgot to take a picture. So, we decided to recreate the moment. I gave the ring back and Scott got back on one knee, and…the first mate still missed the picture. So no pictures of the actual asking, but oh well! We cruised around the Potomac and had a lovely dinner with champagne and then called all our friends and family after! It was slightly chaotic but perfect!

Scott

The night before the proposal I barely slept. I kept checking the weather app, which was fluctuating between 60% rain and 80% thunderstorms. I fell asleep to the mental image of a boat rocking in a storm at sea…and woke up to the sound of heavy rain. If there is one thing Amanda dislikes it is being cold and wet, and my first thought was that we would look like drowned rats that washed up out of the Potomac in the pictures. The charter for the vintage yacht did not give refunds within two weeks of the event, so I just had to pray for good weather when I booked it. As the day went by, I took Peach over to my parents house (which probably seemed pretty suspicious since it had been a while since I had planned a surprise for Amanda and its not like she would overlook the fact the pup wasn’t around). As we got ready I had some trouble explaining the dress code for a boat without giving too much away, but I think I did okay. That was until Amanda fell down the stairs on our way out of the door. She was able to catch herself halfway down, but scraped up her foot and wanted to call off the date. With the boat leaving in 40 minutes I was able to convince her to just change her shoes and ice it in the car as we drove down to the Wharf. Thankfully the rain cleared up after the first few minutes of our drive over. Once it was it was clear we were driving across the bridge into DC I could feel Amanda’s suspicious eyes burning into the side of my head. It wasn’t until we were in front of the boat however, that she turned to me shocked that we would be spending the afternoon on the water. Half hour later I was down on one knee asking her to be my wife. To my delight, she eventually said yes once she got over the initial excitement. It will be a day I never forget, we spent the rest of the evening eating on the water and then calling family with the exciting news.
